Family Engagement Through Music

Family involvement in school is key to student success, and culturally relevant approaches engage families. Since the arts are powerful expressions of culture, musical programs can be among the most effective means of inviting family participation at school.

PS 97 in Brooklyn has experienced this firsthand. For two years running, the school has been awarded an Arts and Family Engagement Grant from the NYC Department of Education “to support arts partner-coordinated workshops and other events that showcase students' school-based arts experiences, engage students and family in art-making or learning activities, and demonstrate the power of the arts in the school setting.” Each year, PS 97 has chosen to partner with S'Cool Sounds to implement the program.

SCS Program Development Associate Evan Harris led last year's program, which enabled kindergarten students to enjoy a four-week intensive residency, culminating in a showcase event for families, friends, and peers. Students learned musical concepts including the beat, tempo and dynamics through a selection of songs inspired by PS 97's cultural diversity. Kindergarteners embraced music from all over the world, whether enthusiastically singing and dancing to a children's song from Ghana, thoughtfully listening to a traditional Chinese song to celebrate the new lunar year, or performing together as an ensemble, representing the beauty of a multicultural learning environment.

This year, the program will be led by SCS Teaching Artist Rosina Bullen. An experienced singer-songwriter and music educator, Rosina will be teaching traditional folk songs and nursery rhymes from various countries, ending with a performance involving both children and families. When asked about her upcoming residency at PS 97, Rosina shared: "I am very excited to be involved in this project; it is a special opportunity to bring new music into the children’s lives and into their homes.”

This year, PS 133 will also be partnering with SCS on an Arts and Family Education Grant! Your contribution can help bring even more culturally relevant musical experiences to children and families across New York City. Donate today to support SCS in continuing this important and impactful work!
