Schools: NYC
SCS offers weekly Teaching Artist-led recorder, percussion, ukulele, and violin instruction to classrooms, as well as the thematic exploration of musical styles from jazz to Arabic to Latin.
MULTICULTURAL MUSIC EDUCATION
Activities nurture music creation, performance, and analysis; students quickly form vibrantly functioning musical ensembles. Teaching materials focus on regional and world music, with K-12 students learning to play Afro-Cuban rhythms, African children’s songs, or a Swedish midsummer festival song as part of an eclectic variety of pieces. Singing and vocal arts are also central to SCS programs. Every program culminates in a joyful concert for the full school community.
All programs follow guidelines set by New York State Learning Standards in the Arts as well as the NYC DOE Curriculum Blueprint for Teaching and Learning in Music. After-school options are also available.
