SCS Gears Up for Back-to-School
As we head into the back-to-school season, S’Cool Sounds (SCS) looks forward to a new year of creating opportunities for creative music-making in schools and communities across New York City, Kenya, and beyond.
Last year, thanks to the generosity of donors and partners, SCS music instruction reached 9,000 students, providing more than 1,500 instruments (from güiros to ukuleles to violins) to make in-school and afterschool residencies possible.
We could not do this work without our talented SCS Teaching Artists (SCS TAs) who bring real-world musical experiences into classrooms.
Our TAs help develop SCS curriculum, residencies, and assemblies rooted in our cross-cultural approach to community-building. Through instrumental performance, music production, body percussion, dance, and more, they help students build artistic confidence and produce original musical works.
As one NYC public school teacher shared, “It’s great to have a performing musician work with the kids; it also shows the kids more future careers in music.”

Our latest resource, Sheet Music for the Recorder, is a companion to Recorders Without Borders and designed for learners of all ages. Students can build their skills progressively, from playing simple melodies to exploring full arrangements.
